1973 Topps #198 Horace Clarke

About Horace Clarke
Clarke scored 65 runs, stole 18 bases and collected 132 hits for the Yankees in 1972. The second series of 1973 Topps included his Yankees card, #198. In 1973 he scored 60 runs and drove in 35 over 590 at-bats.
Horace Clarke was a switch-hitting infielder from Frederiksted, St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fifth player from the territory to reach the majors. He signed with the Yankees in 1958 and worked his way up through their farm system, crediting the Puerto Rican Winter League with sharpening his skills. Clarke debuted with New York in May 1965 and by 1967 had taken over as the regular second baseman, a job he held for seven straight years. A leadoff man and contact hitter, he played 1,272 major league games, more than any other Virgin Islands native. Clarke played through the Yankees' decline after 1964. Criticism from sportswriters and fans bothered him at the time, though manager Ralph Houk and columnist Phil Pepe spoke up for him. He finished his career with San Diego in 1974.
