1973 Topps #82 Fritz Peterson

About Fritz Peterson
Among left-handers, only Mike Cuellar, Mickey Lolich and Dave McNally won more American League games than Peterson between 1969 and 1972. During the 1972-73 hockey season he did color commentary for the New York Raiders of the World Hockey Association, with John Sterling on play-by-play. In 1973 he submitted a thesis on personality differences between major-league and junior college ballplayers for a certificate of advanced study. His Yankees card is #82, in the first series.
Fritz Peterson was a left-handed pitcher who spent 1966 to 1976 in the majors with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Northern Illinois University, he joined the New York rotation as a rookie in 1966 and posted a career record of 133-131. His best year came in 1970, when he went 20-11 and earned his only All-Star selection. Peterson led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, 1968 through 1972, and his lifetime ERA at the original Yankee Stadium was the best of any Yankee who pitched there. Traded to Cleveland in April 1974, he pitched two more seasons before finishing his career with the Rangers in 1976. Writers who covered the Yankees voted him the 1970 Good Guy Award.
