In 1972 Kline went 16-9 with a 2.40 ERA. He worked 236 1/3 innings over 32 starts, four of them shutouts. Wins, ERA, starts, shutouts and innings were all career bests. Card #172, a second-series issue, has him with the Yankees.

Steve Kline was a right-handed starter who spent most of his career with the New York Yankees. A native of Wenatchee, Washington, he was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round in 1966 and reached the majors in 1970 at 22. He moved to Cleveland in 1974, and arm problems cost him all of 1975. He pitched in the minors in 1976, and his last major league season was 1977, when he made 16 relief appearances for Atlanta. His six-season record was 43-45 with a 3.26 ERA, and he started 105 of his 129 games. Afterward he was a pitching coach at Wenatchee High School. He died on June 4, 2018.
