About Rangers Field Leaders (Whitey Herzog / Chuck Estrada / Chuck Hiller / Jackie Moore)
Herzog signed a two-year contract on November 2, 1972, to manage Texas, the only major league club that lost 100 games that year. He dropped the platoon system his predecessor Ted Williams had used. His debut was a 3-1 loss to the White Sox on April 7, 1973. The first win came five nights later, 4-0 at Kansas City. Texas was 47-91 when he was fired on September 7. Card #549, a fifth-series high number, is shared with Chuck Estrada, Chuck Hiller and Jackie Moore. An outfielder for four American League clubs from 1956 to 1963, Whitey Herzog became the Hall of Fame manager behind Whiteyball, winning three straight division titles in Kansas City and the 1982 World Series in St. Louis.
Estrada coached pitchers in the Mets' farm system from 1970 through 1972, working with Buzz Capra, Nino Espinosa and Craig Swan. He became Whitey Herzog's pitching coach in Texas for 1973. Their Topps manager-and-coaches card, #549, also included Chuck Hiller and Jackie Moore in the fifth, high-number series. Chuck Estrada was a hard-throwing Baltimore right-hander who tied for the American League lead with 18 wins as a 1960 rookie and was an All-Star that summer, before elbow surgery in 1963 cut his career short.
After working in the Mets' farm system through 1972, Hiller joined Texas as Whitey Herzog's third-base coach. Rangers catcher Ken Suarez credited Hiller with making him a more aggressive hitter in 1973. The fifth-series 1973 Topps #549 grouped Hiller with Herzog, Chuck Estrada and Jackie Moore on a high-number manager-and-coaches card. A Giants second baseman who hit the first World Series grand slam by a National Leaguer, a bases-loaded homer off the Yankees' Marshall Bridges in Game 4 of the 1962 Series.
Jackie Moore spent 1970 through 1972 as bullpen coach of the Milwaukee Brewers, the franchise that began as the Seattle Pilots, and was released when the 1972 season ended. Topps then listed him on #549, the Texas Rangers managers-and-coaches card, with Whitey Herzog, Chuck Estrada and Chuck Hiller. Jackie Moore appeared in 21 games for the 1965 Detroit Tigers, then spent 32 years as a coach for eight major league teams and managed the Oakland Athletics from 1984 to 1986.
