1974 Topps #313 Barry Lersch

About Barry Lersch
Barry Lersch went 3-6 with a 4.39 ERA in 42 games for the 1973 Phillies, four of them starts. On December 3, 1973, Philadelphia sent him and Craig Robinson to Atlanta for Ron Schueler. His 1974 Topps card, #313, still pictures him with the Phillies.
Barry Lersch was a right-handed pitcher from Denver, Colorado, who spent six seasons in the majors, 1969-1974, almost all of it with the Philadelphia Phillies. In the 1964 Midnight Sun Game he pitched a win over the host Alaska Goldpanners, a game that finished at 2:34 in the morning local time and is in the record books as one of the latest-ending games in amateur baseball history. He signed with the Phillies organization in December 1964. Lersch made his big-league debut on Opening Day 1969, giving up a walk-off two-run homer to Willie Smith in an eleven-inning loss at Wrigley Field. He worked mostly out of the bullpen over four full seasons with the Phillies, 1970-1973, finishing his career 18-32 with a 3.82 ERA in 169 games, including a two-hit shutout of the Montreal Expos on September 30, 1972. The Phillies traded him to the Atlanta Braves after the 1973 season; he closed out his career with a single 1974 appearance for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lersch died in Aurora, Colorado in 2009.
