Carl Means Taylor, born January 20, 1944 in Sarasota, Florida, was a right-handed hitting and throwing utility man who played catcher, outfielder, and first base across six big league seasons from 1968 to 1973. Standing 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds, he broke in with the Pittsburgh Pirates, moved to the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade, then split time between the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh before finishing his career with the Royals. His best season came in 1969, when he hit .348 as a utility player for the Pirates, well above his career mark. He batted .266 with 225 hits over 411 games. Those hits included 31 doubles and ten triples, and he drove in 115 runs. He was the stepbrother of longtime Baltimore Orioles first baseman Boog Powell. The Pirates reacquired him in September 1971 for their pennant drive, though he was not eligible for that year's World Series.
