1974 Topps #200 Cesar Cedeno

About Cesar Cedeno
Cedeno hit .320 again in 1973, second in the league to Pete Rose, with 25 home runs and 56 steals, and fans voted him an All-Star starter. In December a woman died of a gunshot in a Santo Domingo motel room where he was; he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on January 15, 1974, and fined $100. He appears on #200 for Houston and on All-Stars #337, shared with Amos Otis of Kansas City.
Cesar Cedeno was a center fielder who played 17 major league seasons, 1970 to 1986, most of them with the Houston Astros, then the Reds, Cardinals and Dodgers. Signed out of Santo Domingo at 16 by scouts Pat Gillick and Tony Pacheco, he joined the Astros at 19 and combined power, speed and defense. He hit 20 home runs and stole 50 bases in three straight seasons, 1972 through 1974, which no other player has done. He won Gold Gloves from 1972 to 1976, made four All-Star teams and finished with 2,087 hits, 199 home runs and 550 stolen bases; his 487 steals with Houston are still the Astros career record. Houston manager Leo Durocher once said that at 22 Cedeno was as good as or better than Willie Mays had been at that age. He was traded to Cincinnati for Ray Knight after the 1981 season and reached the 1985 World Series with St. Louis. Houston inducted him into the Astros Hall of Fame in 2020.
