About Skip Jutze

In 1974 Jutze appeared in eight games for the Astros, seven of them at catcher. He collected 3 hits in 13 at-bats, drove in one run and finished with a .231 average. His #328 card pictures him with the Houston Astros.

Skip Jutze was a right-handed catcher who appeared in 254 major league games over six seasons, 1972 through 1977, with the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners. The Cardinals drafted him in the fourth round in 1968 out of Central Connecticut State University, and he taught at Candlewood Junior High School in Dix Hills, New York, before his debut on September 1, 1972. On November 29, 1972 St. Louis sent him and Milt Ramirez to Houston for Ray Busse and Bobby Fenwick, and he caught 86 games for the Astros in 1973. He finished with a .215 average, 3 home runs and 51 RBI. He was a member of the first Seattle Mariners team in 1977 and hit the franchise's first grand slam on May 17 of that year in the Kingdome. He credited B-complex vitamins, recommended by a cafeteria cashier, for easing his tension at the plate, and he later passed the advice to pitcher Frank MacCormack. Jutze is a convert to Judaism.
