About David Clyde

Clyde opened 1974 at 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA through six starts under new manager Billy Martin, then slumped. He finished 3-9 with a 4.38 ERA in 28 games. Martin wanted him sent to Spokane for two starts, but the team president overruled him. His #133 is a rookie card showing him with the Rangers.

David Clyde was a left-handed pitcher who went from Westchester High School in Houston straight to the Texas Rangers in 1973. He had gone 18-0 with a 0.18 ERA and 328 strikeouts as a senior, and the Rangers took him first overall in the June draft. Owner Bob Short put him on the mound for a sellout of 35,698 at Arlington Stadium on June 27, 1973, only 20 days after his last high school pitch, and he beat the Twins 4-3. The Rangers kept him instead of sending him to the minors, and he finished 4-8 with a 5.01 ERA. Shoulder trouble sent him down in 1975. Texas traded him with Willie Horton to Cleveland on February 28, 1978, and he went 8-11 for the Indians. He pitched his last game on August 7, 1979, after tearing his rotator cuff, with an 18-33 record and a 4.63 ERA in 84 games. A comeback with the Astros organization in 1981 ended in February 1982.
