1974 Topps #429 Dick Lange

About Dick Lange
Lange started 18 of his 21 games in 1974 after working mostly in relief the year before, when he started 4 of 17. He went 3-8 with a 3.80 ERA and one complete game. He struck out 57 in 113 2/3 innings. His rookie card is #429.
Dick Lange was a right-handed pitcher who spent four major league seasons, 1972 through 1975, with the California Angels. He graduated from Bullock Creek High School in Midland, Michigan, lettered at Central Michigan University in 1968, 1969 and 1970, and was inducted into the school's athletics hall of fame in 1987. The Angels chose him in the seventh round of the 1970 draft. He finished 9-15 with a 4.47 ERA in 70 games, 31 of them starts. He threw 276 innings with 137 strikeouts and one save. His career fell one season short of the pension requirement, because the Angels removed him from the 40-man roster ahead of the 1976 expansion draft and a rotator cuff tear in 1977 ended his chance for another year. That gap put him in Douglas Gladstone's 2010 book A Bitter Cup of Coffee, about retirees denied pensions.
