1974 Topps #397 George Stone

About George Stone
Working in relief to open 1973, Stone went 1-0 with a save and a 0.60 ERA before joining the Mets' starting rotation. He lost his first two starts, then won his last eight decisions as New York came from 12.5 games back to win the East. He worked 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball in NLCS Game 4 and saved the 10-7 Game 2 win in the World Series. His 1974 Topps card is #397, printed with the Mets.
George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
