1974 Topps #289 Rick Auerbach

About Rick Auerbach
Backing up Bill Russell at short and Davey Lopes at second, Auerbach hit .342 in 45 games for the Dodgers in 1974. He reached the postseason for the first time and doubled in his only at bat in the NLCS. Los Angeles lost the World Series to Oakland, four games to one. His 1974 Topps card is #289, shown with the Dodgers.
Rick Auerbach grew up in Woodland Hills, California, and went to Taft High School. The California Angels drafted him in the 13th round in 1968, but he played at Los Angeles Pierce College instead, and the expansion Seattle Pilots took him in the 1969 secondary draft. He reached Milwaukee in 1971 and played 11 major league seasons, with the Brewers, Dodgers, Reds and Mariners, finishing with a .220 average, 9 home runs and 86 RBIs. Most of his work was as a shortstop and utility infielder behind the regulars. He played in two National League Championship Series, in 1974 with the Dodgers and in 1979 with the Reds. His pro career ended after 1981 with Seattle, and he later worked as a farrier and, as of 2012, lived in Calabasas, California.
