1974 Topps #611 Rick Stelmaszek

About Rick Stelmaszek
Stelmaszek began 1974 at Triple-A Salt Lake, and on July 28 the Angels traded him to the Cubs for Horacio Pina. On August 20 he hit the only home run of his major league career, off Don Sutton of the Dodgers. He appeared in 25 games for Chicago, with 10 hits and 7 RBI. Card #611 carries the California Angels.
Rick Stelmaszek was a catcher who appeared in 60 major league games across three seasons and then became a bullpen coach for the Minnesota Twins. The Washington Senators drafted him in the 11th round in 1967 out of Mendel Catholic High School in Chicago. He reached the majors with the Senators, Rangers, Angels and Cubs, and finished with a .170 average. He played his last organized season in 1978 as player-manager of the Twins' Wisconsin Rapids club, and was named Midwest League Manager of the Year in 1980. Minnesota added him to its major league staff for 1981, and he stayed 32 consecutive seasons, the longest tenure of any coach in franchise history. He was on the staffs of the 1987 and 1991 World Series champions and worked under five managers: Johnny Goryl, Billy Gardner, Ray Miller, Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhire. The Twins fired him on October 3, 2012. He threw out the first pitch at Target Field in April 2017 and died that November at 69.
