1974 Topps #146 Ron Fairly

About Ron Fairly
Topps issued Fairly's 1974 Expos card as #146. He had collected 123 hits and scored 70 runs for Montreal in 1973. In 1974 he appeared at first base in 67 games and in the outfield in 20. He finished with 12 home runs and 43 RBI.
Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
