About Tom Walker

The 1974 season brought Walker the first eight starts of his career, one of them a complete game, among 33 appearances for Montreal. He went 4-5 with a 3.83 ERA and struck out 70. At the plate he collected 3 hits in 16 at-bats. Topps printed him with the Expos on #193.

Tom Walker was a right-handed pitcher who worked mostly in relief for the Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals and California Angels between 1972 and 1977. A Tampa native who graduated from George D. Chamberlain High School in 1966, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in January 1968. On August 4, 1971, pitching for the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs in the Double-A Dixie Association, he threw a 15-inning no-hitter, beating Albuquerque 1-0 on 193 pitches. Montreal took him in the Rule 5 draft, and he debuted on April 23, 1972. He appeared in 191 major league games, 17 of them starts. His record was 18-23 with a 3.87 ERA. While playing winter ball in Puerto Rico after Christmas 1972, he helped Roberto Clemente load a plane of Nicaraguan earthquake relief supplies. He offered to fly along, but Clemente told him to stay behind and enjoy New Year's Eve. The plane crashed off Isla Verde with no survivors. Walker was elected to the Texas League Hall of Fame in July 2015. His son Neil retired from the majors in 2021. Walker died in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, in 2023 at age 74.
