About Twins Field Leaders (Frank Quilici / Ralph Rowe / Vern Morgan / Bob Rodgers)

Frank Quilici's first full season as Twins manager, 1973, ended 81-81 and in third place, 13 games behind Oakland. Harmon Killebrew's injury-riddled season produced five home runs in 69 games, and pitching coach Al Worthington left for Liberty Baptist College after the year, replaced by Bob Rodgers. Quilici is on 1974 Topps #447, the Twins manager and coaches card with Ralph Rowe, Vern Morgan and Rodgers. Twins utility infielder who started all seven games of the 1965 World Series, later became the youngest manager in the majors at 33 and guided Minnesota through the mid-1970s.

Rowe joined Minnesota's major league coaching staff in 1972 and stayed through 1975. His 1974 Topps appearance came on #447 with Twins manager Frank Quilici and fellow coaches Vern Morgan and Bob Rodgers. That year, Rowe moved back to his hometown of Newberry, South Carolina. Ralph Rowe played outfield in the minors and managed Washington and Minnesota farm clubs to 4 league championships. His later coaching work included the Twins, Orioles and Expos, with Baltimore employing him as batting coach.

The 1974 Twins still had Morgan on the first base line. He appears on the club's managers-and-coaches card, #447, with Frank Quilici, Ralph Rowe and Bob Rodgers. Before moving into management he had spent 1956 through mid-1960 as a player with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Senators' Double-A club. Vern Morgan was a third baseman for the 1954-55 Cubs who spent the rest of his career in the Washington-Minnesota organization as a minor-league player and manager. He coached first base for the Twins from 1969 until kidney disease ended his work in 1975.

After coaching Minnesota in 1974, Rodgers returned to the Angels organization to manage Salinas in 1975. He coached the San Francisco Giants in 1976 and managed El Paso for the Angels in 1977. Topps #447 in 1974 was the Twins manager-and-coaches card, shared with Frank Quilici, Ralph Rowe and Vern Morgan. Before becoming the Angels' switch-hitting catcher, Buck Rodgers pitched six no-hitters at Prospect High School in Ohio. Ohio Wesleyan University converted him to catcher while he was studying for a liberal arts degree.
