About Bake McBride

Card #135 shows McBride with the Cardinals after a .300 season in 1975 that included 26 steals, second on the club to Lou Brock. In 1976 he hit .335 through 72 games and was the lone Cardinal in the All-Star Game. Cartilage trouble in his left knee brought season-ending surgery in August.

Bake McBride was a left-handed hitting outfielder who won the 1974 National League Rookie of the Year Award with the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the 1980 world champion Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals took him in the 37th round of the 1970 draft after a tryout in which scouts timed him to first base and sent him to the outfield. He hit .299 over 11 seasons with 183 stolen bases, playing for the Cardinals, Phillies and Cleveland Indians from 1973 to 1983. Knee surgeries, shoulder trouble and a 1982 eye infection tied to contact lenses cut into several seasons. After he reached Philadelphia, Phillies fans nicknamed him Shake 'n Bake, and he hit a three-run home run in Game 1 of the 1980 World Series against Kansas City. After retiring he coached outfield and baserunning in the Mets' minor league system and later served as a Cardinals minor league hitting coach.
