About Rogers Hornsby
Hornsby's 1976 All-Time All-Stars card, #342, prints him with the St. Louis Cardinals. In St. Louis, Branch Rickey moved him to second base in 1920, the position he kept for the rest of his career, and he answered with his first batting title at .370. In 1922 his 450 total bases set a National League record that still stands, and from August 13 through September 19 he hit in 33 straight games.
Rogers Hornsby was the National League's dominant second baseman of the 1920s and is widely ranked the greatest right-handed hitter in the game's history. He played 23 seasons, 1915 to 1937, for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Browns, and finished with 2,930 hits, 301 home runs and a .358 career average. He won seven National League batting titles, hit .400 three times, and took Triple Crowns in 1922 and 1925. His .424 in 1924 is the highest average of the live-ball era, and in 1922 he became the only player to hit 40 home runs and bat .400 in the same season. He won the NL Most Valuable Player Award in 1925 and 1929. Hornsby also managed, mostly as a player-manager, and led the 1926 Cardinals to the franchise's first World Series title. A Texan whose contract the Cardinals bought from Class D Denison in 1915, he was so blunt that he was fired from every managing job he held. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the baseball writers in 1942 and entered the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
