About Pie Traynor
Traynor's #343 is the third baseman in Topps' 1976 All-Time All-Stars subset, shown as a Pirate. He had died in Pittsburgh in March 1972, and the Pirates retired his #20 at their home opener on April 18 of that year. In 1969, the centennial of professional baseball, he had been named third baseman on the all-time team.
Pie Traynor spent all 17 of his major league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, their regular third baseman from 1922, and after World War II he was often cited as the greatest ever at the position. He hit .320 for his career and topped .300 ten times. He also drove in 100 runs or more seven times, and Forbes Field held his home runs to 58. Afield he led National League third basemen in putouts seven times and in double plays four times, and his 41 double plays in 1925 stood as a league record until 1950. He hit .346 in the 1925 World Series, homering off Walter Johnson, as Pittsburgh beat Washington in seven games; the 1927 Pirates lost the Series to the Yankees in four. Traynor was named to the first two All-Star Games, in 1933 and 1934, and became player-manager in 1934. His 1938 club led the league most of the season before losing the pennant race to the Cubs in the Homer in the Gloamin' game. He resigned after 1939 and spent 21 years as sports director at Pittsburgh radio station KQV. The nickname came from a Somerville, Massachusetts corner store, where the boy always asked for pie. In 1948 he became the first third baseman elected to the Hall of Fame by the writers.
