1976 Topps #374 Dan Warthen

About Dan Warthen
At 22, Warthen made his debut on May 18, 1975, with a scoreless eighth inning against the Reds. That rookie year ended at 8-6 with a 3.11 ERA. He made 40 appearances, 18 of them starts, and struck out 128. He later said he hurt his arm that summer, when a complete game on a Friday was followed by a relief outing two days later. His 1976 Topps card, #374, is his rookie card and has him with the Expos.
Dan Warthen was a left-handed pitcher for the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros from 1975 to 1978, and later a major league pitching coach for four clubs. A high school All-American football player at Omaha North, he turned down football scholarship offers from Alabama, Nebraska and others to sign with the Expos, who drafted him in the second round in 1971. He finished 12-21 with a 4.31 ERA in the majors. After most of 1978 at Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he won the American Association Pitcher of the Year Award, he went from Philadelphia to Houston in a September 2 trade for Dan Larson. His final appearance, on September 29, was eight innings against San Francisco in which he allowed both runs in a 2-1 loss.
Seattle had him as bullpen coach in 1991 and pitching coach in 1992; he held that role with San Diego in 1996 and 1997 and with Detroit from July 1999 to April 2002. The Mets named him pitching coach on June 17, 2008, and relieved him of the job on October 3, 2017. Texas hired him as assistant pitching coach in November 2017. Omaha Public Schools inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
