1976 Topps #375 Ron Fairly

About Ron Fairly
The Expos traded Fairly to St. Louis at the Winter Meetings on December 6, 1974, for two minor leaguers, first baseman Ed Kurpiel and infielder Rudy Kinard. He spent 1975 as a utility player for the Cardinals and appeared in 107 games, 56 of them at first base and 20 in the outfield. He hit .301 with 7 home runs and 37 RBI. His 1976 Topps card, #375, has him with the Cardinals.
Ronald Ray Fairly grew up in Long Beach, California, and played center field for USC's 1958 College World Series champions. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, choosing to stay near home despite a larger Chicago offer. Carl Furillo taught him how to play right field in National League parks; Fairly later wore Furillo's number 6 as a tribute. His 21 major league seasons included time with six clubs and All-Star selections for Montreal and Toronto. He finished with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average. After playing, he broadcast games for the Angels, Giants and Mariners. Fairly died on October 30, 2019.
