About Rich Hebner

Richie Hebner's 1975 brought a .246 average, with 15 home runs and 57 RBI. Of his 128 games, 126 came at third base. His .392 slugging mark was his first below .400. Back problems twice sidelined him for a week, and the Reds swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS. His 1976 Topps card is #376, with the Pirates, who cut his salary for the new year; he finished 1976 at .249 with 8 home runs and 51 RBI.

Richie Hebner spent 18 seasons in the majors, most of them at third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five NL East titles in six years and beat Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts, he was a star hockey player at Norwood High School before the Pirates made him their first pick, 15th overall, in the 1966 draft. The left-handed hitter got a September look in 1968, took over third base in 1969 and hit .301, and reached a career-high 25 home runs in 1973. In the 1971 postseason he homered off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the NLCS, then off Jim Palmer in the World Series. In the offseason he dug graves at the cemeteries his father supervised, which earned him the nickname "Digger." He signed with the Phillies as a free agent and moved to first base, then played for the Mets, the Tigers, the Pirates again and the Cubs, finishing in 1985 as a pinch hitter. He later spent years as a hitting coach and minor league manager.
