1976 Topps #455 Dick Allen

About Dick Allen
Allen returned to Philadelphia in May 1975 after declining to play for Atlanta. He batted .233 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI that season. He played 113 of his 119 games at first base. On August 22, he homered into the upper deck at San Diego Stadium during a 6-5 win over the Padres. His 1976 Topps card, #455, listed him with the Phillies.
Richard Anthony "Dick" Allen played first base, third base and the outfield during fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, White Sox and Athletics. Philadelphia signed him out of Wampum, Pennsylvania, in 1960 for a reported $70,000. Although the Phillies called him Richie, family and friends knew him as Dick, and he asked writers to use that name. He won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year award and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award with Chicago. A seven-time All-Star, he led his league in slugging percentage three times. In Philadelphia he faced racist abuse and objects thrown from the stands; he wore a batting helmet while fielding and became known as Crash. Allen finished with a .292 average and 351 home runs in 1,749 games. His career slugging percentage was .534, with a 156 OPS+. He died in 2020 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
