1976 Topps #571 Don DeMola

About Don DeMola
Card #571 pictures DeMola with the Expos after a 1975 season in which he went 4-7 with a 4.15 ERA in 60 relief games. He struck out 63 in 97 2/3 innings while pitching through elbow pain, and by spring training in 1976 he needed surgery, with doctors removing calcium from the joint. His last major league game came on September 28, 1975, and a sprained foot and ankle followed in 1977.
Don DeMola was a right-handed reliever from Long Island who pitched for the Montreal Expos in 1974 and 1975, going 5-7 with a 3.77 ERA in 85 games. He pitched at Commack High School South and was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round in 1970, signing rather than attending Saint Leo University. The Yankees released him after two seasons that took him as high as Single-A, and he spent a year replacing windshields at a Commack auto body shop before a tryout with an Expos scout earned him a minor league contract. He made his major league debut in April 1974, three months before turning 22, as he had set out to do. In 1977 he broke a knuckle in a fight with teammate Chip Lang. He never returned to the majors after 1975, pitched in the Expos system through 1978, and retired in April 1979 after breaking camp with the Rochester Red Wings.
