1976 Topps #399 Luis Melendez

About Luis Melendez
Melendez is still pictured as a Cardinal on #399, although he spent the 1976 season split between two clubs. The Cardinals traded him to the Padres for Bill Greif on May 19. He appeared in 92 games across both clubs and hit .224 with 32 hits and 5 RBI. The next year brought eight games with San Diego and his final appearance on June 1, 1977.
Luis Melendez was a Puerto Rican outfielder from Aibonito who played eight seasons in the majors, 1970 to 1977, almost all of them with the St. Louis Cardinals and the last with the San Diego Padres. He made his debut on September 7, 1970. He hit .248 over 641 games with 9 home runs and 122 RBI. After his playing days he managed and coached in the Cardinals and Phillies systems, won the South Atlantic League championship with the Savannah Cardinals in 1994, managed in the Puerto Rico league and coached the Gulf Coast Phillies from 2006 to 2009.
