1976 Topps #480 Mike Schmidt

About Mike Schmidt
The 1975 season behind these cards brought 38 home runs, a second straight league lead, along with a league-high 180 strikeouts and a .249 average. #193 is a League Leaders card shared with Dave Kingman of the Mets and Greg Luzinski of the Phillies; #480 is his own card. The 1976 season that followed opened with 12 home runs in 15 games, including four in one game on April 17 at Chicago, an 18-16 ten-inning win.
Mike Schmidt was a third baseman who played all 18 of his major league seasons, 1972 through 1989, with the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit 548 home runs, led the National League in home runs eight times and in RBIs four times, won three MVP awards (1980, 1981 and 1986) and took ten Gold Gloves. He is the only infielder with ten Gold Gloves and at least 500 home runs. A Dayton, Ohio native, he was an All-American shortstop at Ohio University before the Phillies drafted him in the second round in 1971, 30th overall, one pick after the Royals took George Brett. He stood far back in the batter's box, which made him hard to jam inside. In the 1980 World Series he hit two home runs and drove in seven runs against Kansas City, and the Phillies won their first championship. He played mostly first base in 1985 before moving back to third, and he reached 500 home runs on April 18, 1987, at Pittsburgh. He announced his retirement on May 29, 1989, in San Diego. The Phillies retired number 20 in 1990, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995 in his first year of eligibility. He holds the club records for games, home runs and RBI.
