1976 Topps #258 Nyls Nyman

About Nyls Nyman
Manager Paul Richards doubted in March whether Nyman could throw, and Nyman was among the last cuts of White Sox spring camp before going to Triple-A Iowa. He was recalled in early June, played eight games with four starts, and went 2-for-15 before returning to Iowa. His #258 card shows him with the White Sox. At Iowa he hit .282 with 27 doubles and 5 home runs in 104 games, career highs for doubles and homers.
Nyls Nyman, pronounced Niles, was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played four seasons for the Chicago White Sox, 1974 through 1977. A Detroit native raised in the Sacramento area, he was a 16th-round pick in 1972 out of Rancho Cordova High School. He was Appleton's most valuable player in 1973, then led the Double-A Southern League in runs, hits and triples at Knoxville in 1974 and was named its Player of the Year. A September call-up that year produced nine hits in 14 at-bats, a .643 average, before a pitch chipped a bone in his elbow. He played 106 games in 1975 and hit .226 with 2 home runs, hampered by groin and ankle injuries. A shoulder injury from a long throw in winter ball followed, and he appeared in nine more major league games. His career line was .238 with 2 home runs and 12 stolen bases. The White Sox sent him to St. Louis in September 1977, and he finished in the minors in 1979. His brother Chris also played for the White Sox.
