1977 Topps #611 Dave Lemanczyk

About Dave Lemanczyk
In Toronto's first season, Lemanczyk went 13-16 with a 4.25 ERA over 252 innings. On April 9 he threw the Blue Jays' first complete game and took their first loss, 3-2 to the White Sox. On July 31 he carried a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings against Milwaukee. Topps put him on card #611 in Blue Jays colors.
Dave Lemanczyk was a 6-foot-4 right-handed starter from Syracuse, New York, who pitched eight seasons, 1973 through 1980, for the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and California Angels. The Tigers drafted him in the 16th round in 1972 out of Hartwick College, where he also played basketball. Toronto took him in the 1976 expansion draft, and in 1977 he tied the major league record of 13 wins for an expansion-team pitcher and was named the club's Pitcher of the Year. He represented the Blue Jays at the 1979 All-Star Game without pitching in it. A nerve problem in his back ended his best stretch, and he retired after 1980 at 37-63 with a 4.62 ERA in 185 games. Hartwick put him in its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, and he entered the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He later ran a baseball school on Long Island.
