About this card

Cards #472-479 and #487-494 are the sixteen four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #472, #473, #474, #475, #487, #489, #491 and #493 at least one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Dawson became Montreal's everyday center fielder in 1977, batting .282 with 19 home runs and 21 steals, and took the National League Rookie of the Year award narrowly over Steve Henderson of the Mets. Topps gave him #473, a four-man Rookie Prospects card with Gene Richards of the Padres, John Scott of the Blue Jays and Denny Walling of the Athletics. It is Dawson's rookie card and one of the key rookie cards of the set. Hall of Fame outfielder (class of 2010) for the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Red Sox and Marlins. He won the 1987 NL MVP with 49 home runs for a last-place Cubs team, eight Gold Gloves, and finished with 438 homers and 314 steals.

Richards singled off Woodie Fryman in his first at-bat on April 6, 1977, and finished with a modern-day rookie record of 56 stolen bases and third place in Rookie of the Year voting. On August 29 he stood at first base when Lou Brock broke Ty Cobb's career steals mark. #473 is a four-man Rookie Prospects card with Andre Dawson of the Expos, John Scott of the Blue Jays and Denny Walling of the Athletics, and the rookie card for Richards, Dawson and Walling. Left-handed outfielder for the San Diego Padres from 1977 to 1983 and the San Francisco Giants in 1984. The first overall pick of the January 1975 draft, he retired with a .290 average and 247 stolen bases.

Scott led off and played left field in Toronto's first game on April 7, 1977, going 1 for 5 with a double. He hit his first major league home run off Vida Blue on June 5 and his second off Paul Hartzell two days later. Rookie Prospects card #473 paired the Blue Jays outfielder with Andre Dawson, Gene Richards and Denny Walling. John Scott was a right-handed outfielder for San Diego and Toronto, selected second in the January 1970 draft. He later hit 48 home runs over 3 seasons with the Yakult Swallows.

Walling went 3-for-11 in three Oakland games in 1976. His 1977 Topps rookie card, #473 in the Rookie Prospects subset, grouped Oakland's Walling with Montreal's Andre Dawson, San Diego's Gene Richards and Toronto's John Scott. Oakland traded him to Houston for Willie Crawford on June 15, 1977. Denny Walling was a left-handed Houston pinch hitter and corner infielder whose major league career lasted 18 seasons. His extra-inning single won a 1981 playoff game against the Dodgers.
