About this card

Cards #472-479 and #487-494 are the sixteen four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #472, #473, #474, #475, #487, #489, #491 and #493 at least one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Called up from Pawtucket in mid-July, Aase beat the Brewers 4-3 on July 26 with 11 strikeouts, then shut out the Angels on July 31 at Anaheim, near his home. He ended 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 13 starts for a Red Sox club that finished 2 1/2 games behind the Yankees. Topps #472 is a Rookie Prospects card that pairs him with Bob McClure of the Royals, Gil Patterson of the Yankees and Dave Wehrmeister of the Padres; the photo labeled Patterson is actually Sheldon Gill. Don Aase, a right-hander who pitched from 1977 to 1990 for five clubs, won 66 games and saved 82. He won the first postseason game in Angels history in 1979 and saved the 1986 All-Star Game while setting an Orioles record of 34 saves.

McClure is printed with the Royals on #472, a four-man Rookie Prospects card with Don Aase of the Red Sox, Gil Patterson of the Yankees and Dave Wehrmeister of the Padres. Milwaukee had sent Darrell Porter and Jim Colborn to Kansas City in December 1976, and McClure completed the deal as the player to be named later, joining the Brewers on March 15, 1977. He made 68 relief appearances that summer, with a 2.52 ERA and 6 saves. Left-handed pitcher for the Royals, Brewers, Expos, Mets, Angels, Cardinals and Marlins from 1975 to 1993. He went 12-7 as a Brewers starter in 1982, saved two World Series games that fall, and finished 68-57 with 52 saves and a 3.81 ERA.

Patterson opened 1977 at Triple-A Syracuse and reached the Yankees in April, debuting on the 19th. Six of his appearances were starts. He struck out 29 and went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. His rookie card is #472, a four-man Rookie Prospects card shared with Don Aase of the Red Sox, Bob McClure of the Royals and Dave Wehrmeister of the Padres. The photo labeled as Patterson is actually Yankees farmhand Sheldon Gill, an error Topps never corrected. Gil Patterson was a first-round Yankees pitching prospect out of Miami Dade whose arm gave out in his only big league season, 1977. He later became a respected pitching coach and coordinator, with stops in Oakland, Arizona, Toronto and New York.

Wehrmeister pitched seven games, including four starts, for San Diego in 1976. His 1977 Topps rookie card, #472, grouped him with Boston's Don Aase, Kansas City's Bob McClure and New York's Gil Patterson. The Patterson panel used a photograph of Sheldon Gill, an uncorrected error. Wehrmeister made 30 Padres appearances in 1977. A right-handed pitcher, Wehrmeister was the San Diego Padres' first-round pick, third overall, in the January 1973 draft. He made his major league debut with the Padres in 1976.
