1977 Topps #54 Sandy Alomar

About Sandy Alomar
With Willie Randolph taking over at second base, Alomar became a Yankees reserve in 1976, batting .239 in 67 games. He pinch-ran in Game 5 of the ALCS against Kansas City. His 1977 Topps card, #54, still shows him with the Yankees, but New York traded him to Texas in February for Brian Doyle, Greg Pryor and cash.
Sandy Alomar played fifteen major league seasons as a switch-hitting infielder, appearing in 1,481 games and stealing 227 bases. He signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1960 and reached the majors in September 1964. Before that debut, he played alongside his brother Demetrio at Davenport and batted .329 for Boise in 1962. His major league career took him through the Braves, Mets, White Sox, Angels, Yankees and Rangers, with a .245 average, 13 home runs and 282 RBI. Alomar later coached in the majors. In 1985 he coached at Charleston, where his sons Sandy Jr. and Roberto were teammates; Sandy Jr. later became a six-time All-Star catcher and Roberto a 12-time All-Star second baseman.
