1977 Topps #305 Mickey Rivers

About Mickey Rivers
#305 shows Rivers as a Yankee after a 1976 of .312 with 184 hits and 43 steals. That year brought an All-Star selection, third place in the MVP vote behind Thurman Munson and George Brett, and an outfield spot on The Sporting News AL All-Star team. The Reds swept New York in that World Series. In 1977 he hit .326, went 9 for 23 in the ALCS against Kansas City, and the Yankees beat the Dodgers 4-2 for the title.
Mickey Rivers was a left-handed center fielder and leadoff hitter who played 15 seasons, 1970 to 1984, for the Angels, Yankees and Rangers. A Miami native who attended Miami Dade Community College, he was known as Mick the Quick and was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves. He retired with a .295 average, 1,660 hits and 267 steals. When Reggie Jackson told a reporter he had an IQ of 160, Rivers answered, "Out of what, a thousand?" His final major league game came on September 30, 1984, when the Rangers lost 1-0 to Mike Witt's perfect game for the Angels. After baseball he trained racehorses in his native Florida. In 2007 he was honored with teammates from the 1977 champions at the Yankees' Old Timers Game.
