About Del Unser

Del Unser started 1976 well for the Mets, then was hit by a pitch early in the season and hurt his arm. New York traded him to Montreal on July 21. He ended the year at .228 with 12 home runs in 146 games between the two clubs. In 1977 the Expos began using him primarily as a pinch hitter and split his field time between outfield and first base. His 1977 Topps #471 shows him with Montreal.

Del Unser was a lefty-hitting outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1982, breaking in with the Washington Senators and finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year voting his first year. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, moving among those clubs in a string of trades. Unser led the American League in triples in 1969 and finished his career with 1,799 games, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs. He played a part in the Phillies' 1980 World Series championship, driving in runs with pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Unser's father, Al Unser, played in the majors and also managed and scouted, and Del followed a similar path after his playing days, working for the Phillies as a coach, farm director and scout. His college play at Mississippi State earned him induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
