1977 Topps #537 Dave Roberts

About Dave Roberts
Topps pictured him with the Toronto Blue Jays on #537 after San Diego sold his contract to the expansion club, along with Dave Hilton and Hector Torres. The Padres then traded Fred Kendall to Cleveland for George Hendrick and signed Rollie Fingers and Gene Tenace, leaving the bench thin, and reacquired Roberts from Toronto for reliever Jerry Johnson. He caught 63 games in 1977 and hit .220 with one home run.
Dave Roberts was a third baseman, second baseman and later backup catcher who played parts of ten seasons between 1972 and 1982 for the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. The Padres made the Oregon product the number one pick of the June 1972 draft and signed him the next day. He was in a game that same day, becoming the sixth player to go straight to the majors after being drafted. His best year came in 1973, when he hit .286 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. He spent all of 1976 in Hawaii and was a reserve in San Diego in 1977 and 1978. After a trade to Texas he played every position but shortstop and pitcher in 1979 and appeared in 101 games in 1980. He finished with Houston in 1981 and Philadelphia in 1982, retiring with a .239 average and 49 home runs. He managed Eugene in the Northwest League in 1984 and coached first base for Cleveland in 1987. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994.
