About Doyle Alexander

Alexander signed with Texas on November 23, 1976, after turning down the Yankees, who would not guarantee him twenty starts a season. He made 34 starts in 1977, throwing 237 innings with 12 complete games. He went 17-11 with a 3.65 ERA. The Rangers card is #254, and it prints his birth date as 9/5 instead of 9/4.

Doyle Alexander was born September 4, 1950, in Cordova, Alabama, attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham and Jefferson College in Missouri, and was drafted by the Dodgers in the ninth round in 1968. He debuted with Los Angeles in 1971 and that December went to Baltimore in the trade that sent Frank Robinson to the Dodgers. Baltimore traded him to the Yankees on June 15, 1976, and he started Game 1 of that year's World Series. He then pitched for Texas, Atlanta, San Francisco, the Yankees again and Toronto, where he won 17 games in both 1984 and 1985. In 1987 Atlanta sent him to Detroit for minor leaguer John Smoltz, and he went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA for the Tigers. He made his only All-Star team in 1988 and retired after 1989 with a 194-174 record and a 3.76 ERA.
