1977 Topps #237 Gene Clines

About Gene Clines
Topps still had Clines in a Rangers uniform on #237 in 1977, though he played that season for the Cubs in 101 games. He hit .293 with 70 hits in 239 at-bats. He had 3 home runs and 41 RBI, and 63 of his games came in the outfield.
Gene Clines was a right-handed outfielder with speed and a good glove who spent ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, with the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh took him in the sixth round of the 1966 draft, and he arrived as a reserve who hit .405 in 31 games in 1970. He belonged to the Pirates teams that won four National League East titles in five years and the 1971 World Series. Pittsburgh traded him to the Mets for Duffy Dyer in October 1974; the Mets sent him to Texas for Joe Lovitto, and the Rangers passed him to the Cubs as the player to be named later in the Darold Knowles deal. He finished with a .277 average, 5 home runs and 71 stolen bases in 870 games. A coaching career followed, with the Cubs, Astros, Mariners, Brewers and Giants, where he was hitting coach from 1997, and later the Dodgers as an instructor and adviser. He died in Bradenton, Florida, on January 27, 2022.
