1977 Topps #542 Frank Duffy

About Frank Duffy
His last season as Cleveland's regular shortstop brought a .201 average and 4 home runs in 122 games. Eligible for free agency afterward, Duffy hoped to sign on the West Coast, nearer his California home, and the Indians acquired Tom Veryzer and Dave Rosello to cover the position. His agent, Alan Hendricks, found no better offer elsewhere, and Duffy re-signed with Cleveland for two years just before spring training.
Frank Duffy was a glove-first shortstop who played ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A three-sport athlete at Turlock High School, he graduated from Stanford with a psychology degree, was named a Sporting News All-American in 1967, and was the sixth pick of that year's draft by Cincinnati. Reds manager Sparky Anderson preferred Dave Concepcion at short, and Duffy was moved twice in a single year, first to San Francisco and then to Cleveland. He started at shortstop for the Indians for six seasons and placed near the top of the league's shortstops in fielding percentage in each of his first five years there. He closed his career with the Red Sox in 1978 and 1979, and finished with a .232 average and 26 home runs in 915 games.
