1977 Topps #294 George Medich

About George Medich
After an 8-11, 3.52 ERA year in 1976, Medich appears on card #294 with Pittsburgh, his hometown club. On April 11 of that year he gave CPR to a heart-attack victim in the stands at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Weeks after finishing his MD, he was sent to Oakland with five other players on March 15, 1977, then pitched for the Athletics, Mariners and Mets within one season, going 12-7.
Doc Medich was a 6-foot-5 right-handed starter who pitched eleven big-league seasons, 1972 through 1982, for the Yankees, Pirates, Athletics, Mariners, Mets, Rangers and Brewers, finishing 124-105 with a 3.77 ERA and 16 shutouts. He was also a physician: an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native who played tight end at the University of Pittsburgh, he entered its medical school in 1970 and earned his MD in 1977, working out an arrangement with the Yankees that let him pitch while he studied. The Doc nickname followed him from his first Yankees camp. He was the last Yankee winning pitcher at the original Yankee Stadium, a shutout of Detroit on September 29, 1973. His one postseason appearance came for Milwaukee, two innings in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series. His 1981 season in Texas, 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA, tied for the American League lead in shutouts.
