1977 Topps #553 Jack Heidemann

About Jack Heidemann
Heidemann made the Brewers out of spring training in 1977 and got one at-bat in five games, a fly out to center against Dave LaRoche in Cleveland on May 10, his last major league appearance. Milwaukee sent him to Triple-A Spokane on May 12, and he hit .315 in 102 games there. Card #553 is his Milwaukee issue; the Mets had traded him to the Brewers on June 22, 1976, for minor league pitcher Tom Deidel.
Jack Heidemann was a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers between 1969 and 1977. Cleveland took him 11th overall in the 1967 draft out of Brenham High School in Texas, and after a .305 season at Reno in 1968 the club protected him from the expansion draft as a 19-year-old Class A player. He debuted on May 2, 1969, as a ninth-inning defensive replacement in Washington, then left for six months of active duty with his Texas National Guard unit. In 1970 he played 132 games at shortstop and hit .211 with six home runs. Injuries cost him the job, and he spent all of 1973 in the minors. He returned to Cleveland in 1974, finished the year with St. Louis, and then played in New York and Milwaukee, retiring from the majors after the 1977 season. He finished with a .211 average, nine home runs and 75 RBI, and later worked in real estate.
