1977 Topps #297 Ken Reitz

About Ken Reitz
San Francisco traded Reitz back to St. Louis for Lynn McGlothen on December 10, 1976, but card #297 still shows him with the Giants. Back with the Cardinals in 1977 he hit .261 in 157 games. His 17 home runs were a career high, and he drove in 79 runs. He also set an NL record for fewest errors by a third baseman, 9.
Ken Reitz was a third baseman known for his glove who played mainly for the St. Louis Cardinals between 1972 and 1982. Born in San Francisco, he was a 31st-round pick of the Cardinals in 1969 and debuted on September 5, 1972. He took over third base from Joe Torre in 1973 and led National League third basemen in fielding percentage six times, in 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1981. He won the Gold Glove in 1975, started the 1980 All-Star Game and retired with the highest career fielding percentage among NL third basemen, .970. He also played for the Giants, Cubs and Pirates, and finished with a .260 average, 68 home runs and 548 RBIs in 1,344 games. He earned the nickname Zamboni for the way he scooped up ground balls on the artificial turf at Busch Memorial Stadium. He died in 2021.
