The story on this card
Maury Wills stole 104 bases for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1962, the season this Turn Back the Clock card recalls. He passed Ty Cobb's modern record of 96 from 1915 on September 23 against the St. Louis Cardinals, taking two bags to reach 97 in the Dodgers' 156th game, and he reached 100 on September 26 against the Houston Colt .45's. Commissioner Ford Frick had ruled that Wills would have to break Cobb's mark within 154 games, the length of the 1915 schedule. Wills was thrown out 13 times, played all 165 games including the three-game playoff with the Giants, and won the National League MVP award over Willie Mays.
Maury Wills - the Dodgers shortstop credited with reviving the stolen base, swiping a record 104 bases in his 1962 MVP season and helping three Los Angeles teams win the World Series with his speed, switch-hitting bat and Gold Glove defense.
