1977 Topps #281 Roy Staiger

About Roy Staiger
The 1977 Mets started 15-30, Frazier was fired, and Joe Torre took over as player-manager and preferred Lenny Randle at third. Staiger played 40 games for New York, hitting .252 with two home runs. He was sent down to Tidewater, where he hit 15 home runs in 73 games before a September recall. His #281 card shows him with the Mets.
Roy Staiger was a right-handed third baseman out of Tulsa and Bacone College. The Mets made him the 24th pick of the January 1970 secondary draft, then kept him in the minors until September 1975, the last three seasons at Triple-A Tidewater. He debuted September 12, 1975, at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals, the 50th third baseman in Mets history. He went 0-for-4 that day, and his first hit, a double off Al Hrabosky, came the next. He hit .228 with four home runs in 152 major league games. The Mets traded him to the Yankees for Sergio Ferrer at the Winter Meetings on December 9, 1977, the first player trade between the clubs that did not involve a third team. He hit 19 home runs for Triple-A Tacoma in 1978, played four games for New York in September 1979, and finished his career with Columbus in 1980.
