1977 Topps #352 Mike Phillips

About Mike Phillips
Phillips opened 1977 with the Mets and was traded to the Cardinals for Joel Youngblood at the June 15 deadline. Between the two clubs he hit .225 in 86 games, playing second base and shortstop. His 1977 Topps card, #352, carries the Mets.
Mike Phillips was a left-handed-hitting infielder who played shortstop, second base and third base across 712 major league games from 1973 to 1983 for the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos. Born in Beaumont, Texas, he attended MacArthur High School in Irving, and the Giants took him in the first round, 18th overall, of the 1969 draft. He reached the majors in 1973 after four years in their farm system. He was mostly a utility man, but in 1975 he was the Mets' regular shortstop, appearing in 116 games while longtime starter Bud Harrelson was injured. He finished with 412 hits and 11 home runs and appeared in the 1981 division series for Montreal. After playing he worked nine years in sports marketing for KRLD radio in Dallas, five in corporate sponsorships for the Texas Rangers and seven in corporate sales for the Kansas City Royals. In 2015 he was inducted into the Irving Independent School District Athletic Hall of Fame.
