1978 Topps #629 Don Stanhouse

About Don Stanhouse
The Expos sent Stanhouse, Joe Kerrigan and Gary Roenicke to Baltimore on December 7, 1977, for Rudy May, Randy Miller and Bryn Smith, and Earl Weaver, who called him "my short man," made him the full-time closer. He went 6-9 with a 2.89 ERA and 24 saves, one short of the franchise record set by Stu Miller. The cigarettes Weaver smoked while watching him work gave Stanhouse the nickname Full Pack. Card #629 is printed with the Expos.
Don Stanhouse was a right-hander who started and relieved for the Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers between 1972 and 1982, finishing 38-54 with a 3.84 ERA and 64 saves. A football and baseball star at DuQuoin, Illinois, he was Oakland's first-round pick in 1969 as a third baseman, and manager Billy Herman talked him into pitching by telling him the route to the majors would be shorter. Oakland traded him to Texas on March 4, 1972, and he struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings in his April 19 debut. Montreal acquired him in December 1974, and in 1976 he made 26 starts for an Expos club that lost 107 games. In Baltimore, teammate Mike Flanagan dubbed him Stan the Man Unusual, a play on Stan Musial's nickname, and he was known for a red afro, a primal scream at the end of batting practice and a mound routine of dropping his head as if asleep. The Dodgers signed him to a five-year, $2.1 million contract after 1979; he posted a 5.04 ERA in 1980 and returned to the Orioles in 1982, where his Opening Day ovation was, he said, the biggest thrill of his career.
