1978 Topps #699 Jackie Brown

About Jackie Brown
Brown's 1978 card, #699, lists him with the Expos, the club he pitched for in 1977, his last year in the majors. In 1977 he was the winning pitcher on Opening Day in Philadelphia, beating Steve Carlton, and he pitched in the first Expos game ever played at Olympic Stadium. His final major-league appearance came on September 27 of that year.
Jackie Brown was a right-handed pitcher from Holdenville, Oklahoma, who worked as both starter and reliever for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers, the Cleveland Indians and the Montreal Expos between 1970 and 1977. His older brother Paul also pitched in the majors. In 1974 he went 13-12 with a 3.57 ERA in 216 2/3 innings for Texas, with nine complete games and two shutouts. Over seven seasons he went 47-53 with a 4.18 ERA in 214 games, 105 of them starts. Cleveland traded him to Montreal for Andre Thornton in December 1976, and he finished with the Expos in 1977. He later coached pitchers for the Rangers from 1979 to 1982, the White Sox from 1992 to 1995 and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2002, and worked as a minor-league pitching coordinator. He died in Holdenville on January 8, 2017.
