1978 Topps #541 Larry Cox

About Larry Cox
Seattle sent Cox to the Cubs on October 25, 1977, and he backed up Dave Rader in 59 games, finishing at .281 and leading the team in RBIs per at-bat. On July 7 he hit a three-run homer off Tom Hausman in a 9-7 win. A foul tip off Ozzie Smith split two fingers on his throwing hand, and he hit .353 from September 1 on. His #541 card carries the Cubs.
Larry Cox was a right-handed catcher with a strong throwing arm. Signed by the Phillies as an undrafted free agent in 1966, he spent seven full seasons in the minors before debuting on April 18, 1973. He played 348 major league games for the Phillies, Mariners, Cubs and Rangers over nine seasons, hitting .221 with 12 home runs. Philadelphia tried him on the mound in the low minors until he wrote the club in 1969 that he would not return if he had to keep pitching. His Raleigh-Durham manager said that outside of Johnny Bench, Cox might have the best arm of any catcher in baseball. After his last big league game in 1982 he managed in the Cubs' farm system from 1983 to 1987 and served as bullpen coach on Don Zimmer's staff in 1988 and 1989, the year the Cubs won the NL East. He died of a heart attack at 42 while playing racquetball in Bellefontaine, Ohio.
