1978 Topps #14 Lerrin LaGrow

About Lerrin LaGrow
Card #14 shows LaGrow with the White Sox, who got him from the Cardinals for Clay Carroll on March 23, 1977. Owner Bill Veeck greeted him by asking whether he wanted to start or relieve, adding that the club was so bad it made no difference. He relieved, going 7-3 with a 2.46 ERA in a career-high 66 games in 1977. In 1978 he appeared in 52 games and went 6-5 with a 4.40 ERA, and his 16 saves were among the league leaders.
Lerrin LaGrow was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who pitched in the majors from 1970 to 1980 for the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. A Phoenix native, he won 14 games for Arizona State's 1969 College World Series champions and was a sixth-round Tigers pick that June. He was the Southern League's Player of the Year in 1970. Detroit made him a starter in 1974 and 1975, and after that he worked almost entirely out of the bullpen, becoming the White Sox closer in 1977 with 25 saves, third best in the American League. He was also the target of the Bert Campaneris bat throw in the 1972 ALCS. He finished 34-55 with a 4.11 ERA, 309 games and 54 saves.
