1978 Topps #316 Henry Cruz

About Henry Cruz
The White Sox claimed Cruz on waivers for $20,000 in September 1977, and he came north with the club in the spring of 1978 as a reserve. He hit .221 with 2 homers and 10 RBI in 77 at-bats over 53 games. His last major league appearance came on July 30, and Chicago outrighted him to Iowa in early August when 19-year-old Britt Burns was called up. His 1978 Topps card is #316, printed with the White Sox.
Henry Cruz was a left-handed-hitting reserve outfielder who played 171 major league games for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox between 1975 and 1978, finishing with a .229 average, 8 home runs and 34 RBI. Born in Christiansted, St. Croix, he grew up in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and signed with the Dodgers for $15,000 after Cuban scout Corito Varona spotted him in the local amateur league. He spent much of his career in the minors, where he hit .353 with 18 homers and 88 RBI for Triple-A Albuquerque in 1977. After the majors he played four seasons in the Mexican League, batting over .300 each year and reaching 25 and 27 home runs in his last two summers at Saltillo. In the Puerto Rican Winter League he played 13 seasons, nearly all with Arecibo, which retired his number 36 in December 2005. He later scouted for Cleveland and coached in the Dodgers system.
