About Royle Stillman

Stillman spent all of 1977 with the White Sox, hitting .210 with 13 RBI in 119 at-bats. He appeared in 56 games, playing the outfield in 26 of them and first base in one. His #272 card in the 1978 Topps set lists him with Chicago.

Royle Stillman was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played parts of three seasons, 1975 to 1977, for the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox. A native of Santa Monica, California, he was drafted out of North Torrance High School by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 22nd round in 1969 and reached Double-A in their system. On December 2, 1971, the Orioles acquired him with Doyle Alexander, Bob O'Brien and Sergio Robles for Frank Robinson and Pete Richert. He spent three and a half more years in the minors, batting over .300 twice, before Baltimore called him up in June 1975. Six times in 1975 he was listed as the Orioles' starting shortstop so that he would bat in the first inning before Mark Belanger replaced him. He never took the field at the position, yet the starts make him the only left-hander in major league history to start at shortstop more than once. Signed by the White Sox as a free agent after the 1976 season, he hit his only three major league home runs in Chicago. His 33 big league hits included seven doubles and one triple.
