1978 Topps #585 Woodie Fryman

About Woodie Fryman
Woodie Fryman came to Cincinnati on December 16, 1976, in the trade that sent Tony Perez to Montreal. He and manager Sparky Anderson did not get along, and he was 5-5 with a 5.38 ERA when he retired midway through 1977. He returned in a deal to the Cubs, who appear on his 1978 Topps card, #585. After 13 Chicago appearances he was traded to the Expos on June 9, 1978.
Woodie Fryman was a left-handed pitcher from Ewing, Kentucky, who grew up working his family's farm and turned down early bonus offers before signing with the Pirates in 1965. He debuted in 1966 and worked as both starter and reliever across 18 major league seasons for six clubs. An arthritic elbow diagnosed during his Philadelphia years never fully left him, yet he kept pitching into his forties, converting to a full-time reliever with Montreal late in his run. He made two All-Star teams and helped Detroit reach the 1972 ALCS and Montreal the 1981 NLCS. He finished with 141 wins, 58 saves and a 3.77 ERA. Gene Mauch said nobody in the business could throw any better, and teammate Larry Bowa once said hitting him was like trying to eat soup with a fork. He retired to his Kentucky farm and was later honored by the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
